Is there anything better than curling up with a good TV show? Well, clearly not. You’ve cancelled your plans, you have snacks aplenty, and you’ve turned your phone onto airplane mode. And now that you’re wrapped up in a blanket like a burrito, it’s time to hit play. But… oh no! You haven’t decided what to watch yet! Don’t worry. We’ve picked five shows for you to dive into on your winter binge-fest.
Game of Thrones
Winter is coming? Heck, winter is here! So why not jump into the dense, rich, sordid, moreish world of Game of Thrones, the fantasy show which redefined an entire genre? Full of intrigue, betrayal, sex and dragons, Game of Thrones sees the heroic Stark family pitted against the traitorous Lannisters… but there’s so, so much more to it than that. There’s a huge wall, face-changing assassins, an undead threat… Game of Thrones has it all. Plus, whilst the characters slug it out in the freezing wastelands of Westeros, you’ll be eating popcorn from the comfort of your couch!
The White Lotus
One way to survive the winter is to escape into shows set somewhere warmer. And if you also happen to like watching entitled, rich weirdos suffer emotional torture whilst on vacation, look no further than The White Lotus. The critically acclaimed series which sees some of TV’s best actors enduring some really bizarre problems whilst vacationing at the White Lotus chain of resorts. Sydney Sweeney, Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza, Murray Bartlett and many, many more swell the ranks of this brilliant show.
True Detective
One way to keep warm this winter? Keep your mind moving! And what better way than to throw yourself into a series of increasingly strange, sordid and complex murder mysteries? True Detective is unlike anything you’ve ever seen on TV: each season deals with a different crime, and a different team of detectives trying to crack the case. The record-breaking first seasons saw Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson taking on a bizarre string of deaths in the deep south; Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams were up next… the latest season, Night Country, has Jodie Foster at the helm. Star-studded and deeply, wonderfully strange, True Detective is just the thing you need to keep your brain moving.
Friends
The king of binge-worthy TV, Friends will warm you more effectively than any fireplace ever could. Chandler, Joey, Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Monica - for an entire generation, these six were our roommates, our besties, our ride-or-die BFFS. Living in adjoining apartments in New York, their adventures, romantic fails and countless ups-and-downs provided us with a place to escape at the end of the day. And sure, the show had to end, but that’s the beauty of it - this winter, you can go right back to the start and dive back in all over again. Could we be any more excited?
The Sex Lives of College Girls
Created by Mindy Kaling & Justin Noble, The Sex Lives of College Girls is the ultimate escapism, told from the point of view of a bunch of college girls dealing with… well, the title should make it obvious. Four 18 year old girls attending a (fictional) college in Vermont are dealing with all of the gossip, drama and hijinks of trying to get it on in college, and let us get one thing clear: this show does not mince words when it comes to the subject of sex. And while the characters in it are freely spilling the tea, we recommend a hot cup of tea, a warm blanket, and your undivided attention.
So what are you waiting for? Clear your schedule, turn off the lights, and get ready to hunker down on the couch with these must-watch shows.
