5 Best Thrillers Starring Black Women

Antebellum is here. But what other thrillers should you be watching that are similarly incredible?
In the mood for some critically acclaimed thrillers helmed by some of the best actresses of this generation?

Antebellum

Antebellum focuses on Veronica Henley, a critically acclaimed black author played by music superstar Janelle Monáe. The twist? She’s also, somehow, a woman named Eden, enslaved at a plantation during the American Civil War. It’s a strange, frightening, surreal and smart movie. Be warned: you will not want to watch this alone.

Us

Jordan Peele’s staggering follow-up to the sublime Get Out, Us focuses on a family who are stalked, attacked and whittled down by… themselves? The real star of Us, as far as we’re concerned, is the wonderful Lupita Nyong’o – we knew she had chops when we saw her in Black Panther and 12 Years a Slave, but she’s almost unrecognizable here.

Jackie Brown

Patron saint of the blaxploitation movement, Pam Grier, made an epic return to the big screen in Tarantino’s electrifying Jackie Brown. Honestly, Jackie Brown is basically the perfect film. An incredible cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Robert De Niro, Michael Keaton), a terrific soundtrack, and a killer plot. But Pam is the centre of it all.

Widows

Widows is one of those amazing, but super stressful, films. You know the sort. It’s about the widows (hence the name) of a bunch of bad dudes who steal stuff, but who all got killed. And now they have to pay off the debt their husbands left them with. The award-winning Viola Davis leads the cast, and the rage, focus and fury of her character is what ties the whole piece together.

Queen & Slim

During their first date, Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) get stopped by a cop. The cop gets violent, and Slim has to shoot the cop in self defence. Now, Queen and Slim are on the run, and as they travel cross-country, they become symbols for America’s trauma at the hands of a racist police force. Jodie Turner-Smith’s turn as Queen is the stuff of legend.
