The biggest movies of 2020

2020 is crammed with unmissable movies, and here are the best of the lot!
2020 is here! And believe it or not, this year has an epic slate of films on the way. But where to start? What should you lock down in your diary as the must-see movies of the coming year? Start getting hyped… this might be the best year for cinema yet.

Birds of Prey

It’s a great year for heroic onscreen women. Well… heroic might be a bit of a stretch, given that we’re talking about none other than Harley Quinn, who has broken free from The Joker and is flying solo. But Margot Robbie’s iconic baddie is about to realise that she’ll need backup, which leads her to getting together with a couple of other unforgettable Gotham ladies, forming the unstoppable team The Birds of Prey. This is going to be a hell of a film.

Cinematic genius Christopher Nolan (Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, the Dark Knight trilogy) has something new in store: a spy movie. Details are being kept deliberately scarce, but imagine James Bond with time travel. Interested? Us too. The cast looks incredible, with John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh and Australia’s own Elizabeth Debecki rocking up onscreen.

Wonder Woman 1984

It’s Wonder Woman, eighties style! Gal Gadot is returning as Wonder Woman, but this time she’s doing her adventuring in the year 1984. There’s the iconic hair, the clothes, the music… but there’s also a villain who gives everyone in the world everything they’ve ever wanted. And Wonder Woman isn’t immune to this, either, meaning we’ll see the return of Chris Pine as the love of Wonder Woman’s live, Steve Trevor. Plus, we get Kristen Wiig as the villainous Cheetah!

Promising Young Woman

Ever want to see bad men get their comeuppance? Promising Young Woman, starring Carey Mulligan, is about a young woman named Cassie whose life gets ruined. So what does she do? Uses her smarts and sex appeal to go on a revenge spree, of course. This is going to be fantastic, folks.

Into the Heights

You know Lin Manuel Miranda, right? He’s the genius behind the hit musical, Hamilton, and you may have also seen him in Mary Poppins Returns. But the musical that put him on the map was Into the Heights, which is set over three days in Washington Heights, New York City, following a largely Hispanic-American community. Now, it’s a movie!

The Personal History of David Copperfield

Armando Iannucci, creator of Veep, is turning his hand to one of the best known works of literature in the English language. Charles Dickens’ coming of age story was always charming and funny, but this version looks absolutely bonkers. It’ll feature the gorgeous Dev Patel as David Copperfield, and will have Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton and more beloved actors along for the ride, too.

If you have kids, or are a kid at heart, then there’s a big treat in store in 2020: a new animated adventure starring Scooby Doo (nicknamed Scoob). This time, the mystery being solved is a big one… and it’ll involve teaming up with some incredible Hanna Barbera characters to stop the dog-pocalypse!

Based on one of the all-time great science fiction series, Dune is the new epic film from Denis Villeneuve, director of The Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Set on the nightmarish desert planet Arrakis, Dune follows the conflict between two great houses: the noble house Atreides, and the monstrous house Harkonnen. Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya and Jason Momoa fill out a star-studded cast. And because there’s no trailer yet, here’s the trailer for the 1984 Dune movie by David Lynch!
