What's your favourite Aussie movie?
You know, the movies that give you goosebumps and butterflies, that make your heart melt and your emotions soar, and inspire you to tell everyone you know to just watch them?
Here are some of our favourites:
Breath
Breath is about as Aussie as it gets! Set in the mid 70’s, it’s a true blue tale of two teens facing their fears both in the surf and in early adulthood. Steered along the way by a rouge mentor they begin to understand what growing up is all about. Based on the iconic Tim Winton novel, this movie truly captures what it’s like to be young and “girt by sea”.!
GO!
If you’re looking for an Australian movie that you can watch with the whole family (without the desire to start scrolling through Facebook before the halfway point) this is it. Funny, smart, and full of heart, GO! is an inspiring story about coming together in the face of adversity. This high-octane Family movie needs to be on your Summer watch list.
Red Dog
Bolting across the outback with a heart as big as the land itself, this movie is a phenomenon. Our whole country cheered on the exploits of this beloved canine. And in GREAT news, there's also a prequel called RED DOG: True Blue!
Muriel’s Wedding
Has any Aussie movie aged better than Muriel’s...err, sorry - Mariel. Through dry wit, satire and bold exaggeration, this movie taught us to love ourselves just the way we are. Muriel’s Wedding makes us all wish we could spend more time in Porpoise Spit.
Gallipoli
The most important Australian movie ever? Probably... definitely. Watch this and your heart will burst with pride, while it breaks with the tragedy of it all. That final scene is eternal.
The Castle
Don’t you wish the Kerrigan’s were still around today? The definitive Aussie family coping with issues that affect us all: the big guy vs. the little guy, corporate greed, neighbourliness. No other movie has spurned more sayings in our daily lives than The Castle - now, stick that straight in your pool room.
Strictly Ballroom
“A life lived in fear is a life half lived” - has any Aussie movie had a better credo? Who doesn't relate to this movie’s powerful themes of the ugly duckling transforming into a beautiful swan and dancing to her own beat. This little masterpiece turned the world onto ballroom dancing and pivoted Baz Lurhmann into the stratosphere.
Babe
Australia does great animal movies and what an imaginative treasure Babe is. This one is from the rural heart of Australia – where animals literally talk. A children’s fantasy with more emotional truth than most dramatic movie, if your kids haven’t already seen it, take them on a journey to the land of Farmer Hoggett.
Happy Feet
He can’t sing but he sure can dance! And that’s what he did, straight into the hearts of audiences all over the world. Mumble the Emperor Penguin was not like other penguins – and that’s what made his story so captivating. George Miller, the creator of Babe, was on another winner with this dazzling, exuberant adventure. It’s a timeless story with a fab get-up-and-dance soundtrack.
Paper Planes
A heart-warming and life-affirming movie with themes of finding your way, following your dreams and spreading your wings. Say Geronimo and get ready for take-off with a movie that’ll make you feel like your head is in the clouds.
