The 5 Greatest Ever Sleuths

Everyone loves a genius detective, but who is the smartest of them all?
When something goes wrong – and we mean really, really wrong – who do you call? Cinema, TV and literature have given us some truly magnificent minds, detectives who can detect just about anything. But when there’s a body in the parlour and the butler is giving you a suss look, these are the super-sleuths you need to call.

Miss Marple

Ever met a grandma who knows exactly what’s up? Then you’ll probably love Miss Marple. Jane Marple is her actual name, and she’s an amateur detective who lives in the tiny village of St. Mary Head. She’s appeared in many, many books from genius author Agatha Christie, but has also appeared on-screen many times. She’s incredibly smart, shrewd, and mysterious, and at once point was even played by the iconic Angela Lansbury!

Hercule Poirot

Poirot, another Agatha Christie creation, is the infamous little Belgian detective who participated in iconic cases such as Murder on the Orient express. He was played for many, many years by David Suchet in the TV show, but most recently you may have caught him being played by Kenneth Branagh in the new film (crammed with an all-star cast). Poirot is incisive, neurotic and brilliant.

Jessica Fletcher

Ahh, Jessica Fletcher. Crime writer in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, Jessica Fletcher soon turns her ability to write crime stories into an ability to solve real life crimes, too! Fletcher is played by Angela Lansbury, and she’s absolutely brilliant. Here’s a fun, terrifying fact: given Cabot Cove’s small population, if it were real, it’d have the highest murder-per-capita of any town in America.

Miss Fisher

Miss Fisher is absolutely brilliant. You’ve probably seen her adventures in the award-winning and beloved ABC TV show, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Phryne Fisher is an international woman of mystery, getting tangled up with the Melbourne police (and a particularly charming detective) and solving mysteries at a rate of knots. She’s the star of the glove-trotting new feature film, Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears, which will see her facing a case that will push her to her considerable limits.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes! First off… how good would a Holmes and Miss Fisher crossover be? Secondly, Holmes is an absolute legend. Whether you’ve read the books by Arthur Conan Doyle, watched the Guy Ritchie films starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson, seen the modern day interpretation, BBC’s Sherlock, or the surprisingly great American series Elementary, you’ve likely enjoyed Sherlock’s deductive adventures in some form.
