7 movies based on true events

Movies based on true events? There’s nothing better. Here are seven of the best.
They say truth is stranger than fiction. Well, some of you’re the most successful films of all time are actually based on things that really happened. Here are our seven favourite movies that are inspired by real life.

7. Chopper

We’re not sure global audiences realised just how true this story was when they saw it! Eric Bana brought terrifying Aussie criminal Mark ‘Chopper’ Read to life in this terrifying flick. The weirdest part of it all? Bana had only ever really done comedy up until this point. Talk about steeping outside his comfort zone!

6. The Death of Stalin

Written and directed by Armando Iannucci (the twisted genius behind Veep), The Death of Stalin is a black comedy that recounts what happened when Stalin died and everyone scrambled to fill the power vacuum. Well, it’s a loose comedic reimagining of those events, but given how dark that period in history was we kind of don’t mind a little artistic licence!

5. Erin Brockovich

There’s basically nothing we love more than a good Julia Roberts movie, but Erin Brockovich is next level. Why? Well, it’s all based on a true story! Erin herself is totally a real person, and Roberts got to know her while researching the role. In fact, the real Erin said “the film is 98%-99% accurate”.

4. The Mule

The Mule is based on one of the weirdest true stories in recent memory. A war veteran in his 80s, alone, widowed and alienated from his family, somehow falls into the strangest job you could imagine: he becomes a drug mule for the cartels. The strangest part? He’s really, really good at it.

3. The King’s Speech

To cope with a bad stammer, the soon-to-be-King, King George VI, had to secretly consult with a speech therapist, Lionel Logue. Having Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush face-off in this wonderful movie really hits a chord, but knowing that George and Lionel stayed lifelong friends in real life just makes it all the sweeter.

2. Just Mercy

Based on the incredible, heartbreaking and uplifting true story, Just Mercy follows Bryan Stevenson, a newly graduated lawyer. Fresh out of Harvard, Bryan (played by Michael B. Jordan in a career-popping performance) sets himself a mission: head to Alabama and defend people wrongly accused, or who can’t afford an attourney. Bryan’s first case? Walter McMillan (Jamie Foxx), accused of murdering a young girl despite evidence to the contrary. Just Mercy is a staggering, epic, vital piece of true story cinema.

1. 12 Years a Slave

Back in the mid-1800s, a free-born African American man who lived in New York was kidnapped by two conmen and sold into slavery. He wrote a harrowing book about what happened to him, and that book became the universally acclaimed film 12 Years a Slave. What makes the film hit so hard is the fact that it all really happened.
