The Down-Lo on J.Lo

With Hustlers dancing onto screens and her career going up and up, Jennifer Lopez is so hot right now. But hasn’t she always been?
Jennifer Lopez has turned 50. Freaky, we know. How did she celebrate? She stomped the catwalk in a recreation of her iconic Versace dress, got married to a baseball superstar, AND did a gritty film about strippers, learning to pole dance in the process. It’s kind of tricky trying to nail down which of J.Lo’s accomplishments kick the most butt, though, so we’ve rounded up all the need-to-know moments from her amazing life in the one place for you!

Selena

In 1997, Lopez took the world by storm, landing her first leading role in the heartbreaking biopic Selena. Her performance as the ill-fated Latino superstar who was murdered at 23 had critics raving. Here was this unknown who captured to imaginations of moviegoers and showed the wider world the tragic story of Selena. Here’s a weird fact: Lopez also appeared in Anaconda the same year. That’s the way to do it: mix critical acclaim with cult classic.

Out of Sight

Out of Sight is one of Jennifer Lopez’s best movies, hands down. Steven Soderbergh (Oceans 11, Erin Brokovich, Magic Mike) turned out this terrific heist slash love story that follows a charming career criminal (played by George Clooney) and a tenacious U.S. Marshal (Lopez). It’s also a really great companion piece to Hustlers – Lopez’s character in Out of Sight is strong, smart, driven, sexy, a little ruthless… just like her character in Hustlers.

Music Maker

Have you ever been going pretty well at something and decided to put MORE onto your plate? Well that’s J.Lo in a nutshell. Clearly not content with her acting career taking off, she seriously leant into her music career. In 1999, she released her debut album On The 6, and the single If You Had My Love shot to the top of the charts. The album went on to sell over 7 million copies. No biggie.

That Green Dress

Ahh, the dress. Jennifer wore this iconic Versace number to the 42nd Grammy Awards in the year 2000, accompanied by then boyfriend Puff Daddy. It was a ground-breaking moment in fashion and in red carpet looks, and cemented Lopez as a style icon. Now technically Ginger Spice wore it first, but nobody remembers that, really. And when you’ve erased everyone’s memory of a Spice Girl, you know you’ve made your mark. She also recently wore a reinterpretation of the dress at the Milan Versace runway, and NAILED IT.

Looks Good, Smells Good

As if being a successful actor and singer wasn’t enough, J.Lo decided to take things up a notch in 2003, launching own clothing line and her own scent! Now, fans can look like her and smell like her! Well, you’ll smell like her trademark scent, Glow, but you’ll never actually smell like her. According to J.Lo, Glow is ‘soft, sexy, scent touched with subtle, clean freshness.’ We don’t know what that means, so we’re gonna say… flowers? Smells like flowers, probably.

Bennifer

Ahh, Bennifer. Not sure what Bennifer is? You may have dodged a pop-cultural bullet there. J.Lo had finished up seeing Sean Combs (AKA Puff Daddy) and a brief marriage to a back-up dancer, when she entered into a relationship with superstar Ben Affleck. They made two films together, Gigli and Jersey Girl, but sadly their engagement fell through just before the ceremony. Although both films didn’t smash at the box office Bennifer contributed to one of the best film clips of all time, canoodling on a yacht in ‘Jenny from The Block’

Marc Anthony

In 2004, J.Lo married singer and longtime friend Marc Anthony, and the next year they performed a loved-up duet at the Grammy awards. They went on to have twins, make a movie together, become minority owners of the Miami Dolphins together… they’re over now, though. Totally broke up. And now, Jennifer is with…

Alex Rodriguez

J.Lo is now engaged to A-Rod, the famous baseballer whose career with the Yankees is record-breaking. He and Lopez have become something of a power couple. Marc Anthony is still a part of Lopez’s life, and he, Jennifer, A-Rod and Marc’s kids all hang out on occasion. Isn’t that nice?

Maid In Manhattan

OK, let’s talk romantic comedies. Nobody does rom-coms quite like Jennifer Lopez. One of her most iconic hits is Maid In Manhattan, in which Lopez plays a maid at a high-end hotel who bumps into a rich Republican senator (played by Ralph Fiennes) while she’s trying on a ballgown. It’s a charming, funny Cinderella story with Lopez at her charming best. And whilst the idea of J.Lo ending up with Voldemort seems a little odd, it was 2002. It was a weird time, OK!

American Idol

Alright, so we’ve established her musical and acting credentials, and gotten a handle on her personal life. But J.Lo has had a string of other fascinating gigs over the years. J.Lo even hosted American Idol! For two seasons she judged contestants across from Steve Tyler of Aerosmith, and she absolutely nailed it. Having said that, sitting in a huge goofy chair and whacking a big red button seems like it’d be a fun gig.

Hustlers

Hustlers is basically Goodfellas, but with strippers instead of gangsters. It’s also based on a true story, with J.Lo’s ‘Ramona’ absolutely ruling the roost. J.Lo, having just turned 50, threw herself into the role. She learned to pole dance, and her scenes in the film are deeply moving and sexy as heck.
