The best animated movies for adults

Are you a grown up craving an animated movie? We’ve got you covered.
Want to know one of the best things about being a grown-up? We get animated movies that totally cater to us. We don’t need to feel guilty for watching animated character bound around on-screen, not when the best and brightest filmmakers around are turning their hands to animated features! But where to start? Here are the seven best animated movies for grown-ups.

The LEGO Movie

The reason The LEGO® Movie resonated so much with people? It’s not just an adventure film that families love, it’s a story about what it’s like to play with LEGO® as a kid. More than that, it deals with what it’s like when your inner child bumps up against the cynicism of adulthood. It’s hilarious, heartfelt and looks absolutely gorgeous, too.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

Not content with making a killer movie about LEGO®, Chris Miller and Phil Lord followed up their first LEGO® film with a sequel every bit as smart and funny as the first. The LEGO® Movie 2 throws our heroes into the deep ending, tackling what it means to be a grown-up.

Akira

Grittier and darker than most live-action movies, Akira truly is for adults. It first came out in 1988 in Japan, and since then has become regarded as one of the greatest animated films of all time. Set in Tokyo after World War 3 and full of motorcycle chases, psychic nightmares and full-blown riots, Akira is brutal and wonderful.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

If you haven’t already seen Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, what are you waiting for? Seriously, it has this amazing ability to make adults feel like kids again. Entire groups of formerly cynical grown-ups have been spotting entering screening with scowls on, and emerging looking ten years younger. It’s also a really fresh, fun spin on the Spider Man story you’re all already familiar with.

Isle of Dogs

A stop-motion animation from Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic), Isle of Dogs is a very warm, very kind, very intelligent story about an island made of garbage where dogs are sent due to overpopulation. One young boy decides to fly a makeshift plane over there to rescue his beloved family dog.

The Incredibles

The Incredibles is a superhero movie, sure. But it also happens to be a movie about the pressures of raising a family, learning how to be a good role model, how to put others before yourself and how to deal with having a fame-hangover. All of this, and a fantastic adventure movie.

Persepolis

This Academy Award nominated animated feature is a fantastic coming-of-age story set during the Iranian cultural revolution. Imagine being an awkward teenager trying to figure your life out as your entire country becomes militantly conservative, banning things like music.
