Most epic makeup transformations

We count down the most off-the-wall, monstrous make-up transformations ever.
We love a make-up transformation in a movie. Nothing like five hours in the make-up chair being caked in paint and rubber to really test your acting chops!

We think these are hands down the best movie make-up transformations out there.

5. Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger’s transformation from adorable heartthrob into sociopath (with a fair portion of his face mangled beyond repair) earned him critical accolades, and helped turn his version of the joker into the definitive onscreen Joker. We’re still floored by how great this make-up is.

4. Helena Bonham Carter – Planet of the Apes

Planet of the Apes is, at its core, a series about apes that walk and talk. But the make-up job on Helena Bonham Carter’s Ari, a friendly ape lady, was kind of astounding.

3. Jim Carrey – The Grinch

Jim Carrey’s Grinch is the second most famous green-faced idiot he’s played onscreen. And next to Shrek, The Grinch is the grumpiest green man in cinema history. The Grinch hates Christmas, but you know we don’t hate? Jim Carrey’s performance in this movie. Also, Jim spent 92 days in this makeup.

2. David Harbor – Hellboy

Ron Pearlman’s original Hellboy makeup was insanely good, but this make-up job for the new Hellboy flick is twice as detailed, and twice as big. It also makes this Hellboy look a lot more like he did in the comics – more grizzled, more jacked, hairier.

1. Doug Jones – The Pale Man

Pan’s Labyrinth is a terrifying journey into a fantastical underworld is made all the more stressful thanks to The Pale Man, a monster with eyes in his hands. Check this out. It’d be pretty easy to beat him, though. Just buy him gloves for Christmas and kick him in the groin. Done.

Oh, the sequel – often overlooked. But don’t be fooled, sometimes the second act of a story is even better than the first, and we’ve got the sequels to back us up. (some spoilers ahead)
