Top 9 epic Sci-Fis you might not have seen yet

Science fiction is so hot right now. And because we know you love bingeing, we’ve gotten together a list of nine of the most obscure, iconic, must-see sci-fi shows for you to dive into.
The Prisoner

Imagine if James Bond was trapped on the island from Lost. That’s basically the bonkers pitch for The Prisoner, a cult classic series from the sixties in which a super spy, played by Patrick McGoohan, resigns, is gassed, and wakes up in a creepy village on a remote island. It’s a piping hot slab of sixties weirdness, and is considered by many critics to be one of the greatest shows of all time. If you’ve not seen it before, do yourself a favour – it’s only 17 episodes long and each one is an absolute cracker.

The Leftovers

What if 2% of the Earth’s population – 140 million people – suddenly disappeared? That’s the premise of The Leftovers, the gritty, intense show from the creators of lost and starring the dreamy Justin Theroux. Also, it finished recently so you can binge on the entire show (though we’re not sure your heart will take it, as The Leftovers is one of the most intense TV experiences out there)!

Deep Space Nine

With the recent news that Patrick Stewart will be returning in a new series about Picard, Trek fans are as excited as ever. But the single best Star Trek series, for our money, is Deep Space Nine. It’s basically a dark, complex political thriller in space. It boasts the most colourful crew of any Trek series, plus it has cameos from a whole lot of recognisable faces. Worth the watch even if you aren’t a Trek fan.

One of the smartest, strangest shows on TV right now is Legion. The premise is this: what if Professor X, founder of the X-Men, had a kid whose powers were so immense and dangerous he had to be put into an institution? The series has received critical acclaim from comic fans and TV snobs alike. If you dig weird TV full of amazing visuals and terrific performances, Legion is right up your alley. (Also, it draws a fair bit of influence from The Prisoner!)

This completely brilliant sci-fi series doesn’t just star Joshua Jackson (Pacey from Dawson’s Creek) in a frankly awesome performance, it has two other leads who are both Aussies! Anna Torv as Olivia Dunham, and John Noble as Water Bishop are both brilliant here, and Fringe remains a criminally underappreciated masterpiece.

Twin Peaks: The Return

Back in the early nineties, David Lynch made the weirdest, creepiest, and best show on TV, Twin Peaks. Sadly, it was cancelled on a cliffhanger ending, leaving fans hanging for 25 years. Last year, though, he brought Twin Peaks roaring back with The Return, a supernatural nightmare full of incredible performances. It makes even less sense this time around, but it’s dark and wonderful regardless.

JK Simmons stars as a man who, one day, finds out he has a duplicate who has crossed over due to an unnatural passage formed between two worlds. Part cold war thriller, part sci-fi, Counterpart is really smart television. We can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

The Evil Dead

The Evil Dead movies are violent, bloody, sweaty hunks of cinematic goodness, if for no other reason than they gave us Bruce Campbell’s Ash, the ultimate anti-hero. A few years back, Sam Raimi resumed the story of Ash in TV form, and we got the amazing Ash Vs The Evil Dead. The show recently wrapped up, so you can – and should – treat yourself. It’s a hell of a ride.
