The greatest movie soundtracks ranked

Everyone loves a good movie soundtrack. But which ones are the best? We’ve laid down our ten faves.
10. Kill Bill

If you’ve seen Kill Bill, there’s no way you haven’t whistled that creepy tune Daryl Hannah whistles as she wanders towards Uma Thurman’s Beatrix Kiddo. This soundtrack has everything: Nancy Sinatra, creepy country music, Isaac Hayes… if you’re planning on fighting 88 bad guys in a Japanese restaurant, this is the album for you.

9. Amelie

French composer Yann Tiersen made the dreamiest soundtrack for Amelie, the film in which Amelie (Audrey Tatou) chases love in the heart of Montmartre. The music is just as whimsical and romantic as the movie is – if you’re ever having a bad day, whack this soundtrack on.

8. Romeo and Juliet

Who didn’t have the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack rattling around in the nineties? Garbage, Radiohead, The Cardigans… this album is pure, distilled nostalgia. You can practically smell the teenage pheromones wafting off each track.

7. High Fidelity

Ever go through a breakup? Do you spend too much time wandering through record stores? Are you, and be honest… a little moody? The soundtrack for this awesome John Cusack indie romcom is crammed with obscure little tracks that can, and will, make your day.

6. Blues Brothers

Wait. You haven’t seen The Blues Brothers? Right. First, watch the movie. Second, grab the soundtrack. The movie is great, but it’s also pretty much a series of brilliant music videos strung together and starring some of the best musicians this side of Motown. Pro tip: the Blues Brothers soundtrack makes for an amazing road trip.

5. Trainspotting

The Trainspotting soundtrack might be the most British soundtrack of all time. Stuffed to the brim with grimy Britpop and sleazy, sweaty techno, this album defined a generation. The movie is a work of art, but so is this soundtrack (oh, and the sequel, plus it’s soundtrack, are great too).

4. Lost in Translation

Sofia Coppola broke our hearts when she sent Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson to Tokyo to bump into each other in this stunning film, but she also broke the mould with the soundtrack. It’s a lush, dreamy series of tracks which are perfect for wandering through neon-soaked streets by yourself.

3. Boogie Nights

The best soundtracks capture an era, a feeling, without falling back on the songs that you immediately recognise. Boogie Nights is a weird, wonderful, deeply confronting film and the song choices are no different: you’ll from soothed to freaked out in a matter of minutes.

2. Purple Rain

We’re still coming to terms with the fact that Prince has passed away (though we strongly suspect he teleported back to his mothership and is off exploring the stars somewhere, probably with Bowie). But there’s no better way to celebrate his life with arguably his greatest album, one that just so happens to be the soundtrack to the movie of the same name.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy took everyone by surprise, in part due to it’s out of this world soundtrack. Part mixtape, part love letter from a mother to her son, part nostalgia-riddled showbag of musical oddities, the Guardians soundtrack is stunning from start to finish.

Keep up the rhythm
