Shock smooches, surprising snubs and unforeseen upsets.TV’s night of night’s didn’t disappoint, here’s our top 6 moments.
It was a night of shock smooches, surprising snubs and unforeseen upsets at TV’s night of nights…

1. Big wins for Big Little Lies
On a night everyone thought would belong to the Handmaids, HBO’s addictive adaption of Aussie author Liane Moriarty’s novel Big Little Lies stole the show, snatching five Emmys in the limited series categories, including wins for Outstanding Lead Actress, (Nicole Kidman, we called it!), Outstanding Supporting Actress (Laura Dern), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Alexander Skarsgård), Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series (Jean-Marc Vallee) and Outstanding Limited Series.

Delivering one of the most inspirational speeches of the night, Kidman shockingly revealed she teamed up with Reese Witherspoon because they weren’t getting offered decent roles in Hollywood. “[Our friendship] created opportunities out of a frustration because we weren’t getting offered great roles. So now, more great roles for women please.”  We think Nic’s wish will be granted. There are whispers Big Little Lies 2 is on the way…

2. Nicole and Alex’s shock kiss

The Emmys shock kiss award went to Alexander Skarsgård for his affectionate full-lip plant on co-star Nicole Kidman after his supporting actor win. Skarsgård played Kidman's abusive husband on the series and both actors admitted their violent scenes together were tough to stomach. On stage, Alexander thanked his mother Swedish actress My Agnes, the “incredible women” in his life, and “the ladies of the show—thank you for making this boy feel like one of the girls.”

3. Sean Spicer’s appearance
Jaws dropped when Donald Trump's vilified former press secretary Sean Spicer walked on stage and joked that the ceremony would attract “the largest audience to witness an Emmys” – a reference to the reportedly fudged attendance numbers at Trump’s inauguration ceremony. Melissa McCarthy, who plays Spicer on Saturday Night Live appeared visibly stunned in the audience. Awks at the afterparty.

4. Stranger Things goes home empty handed
Emmy punters were shocked when supernatural hit Stranger Things went home empty handed – with Netflix’s biggest show of the year strangely left out of the winner’s circle. After five awards in the Creative Arts Emmys, the show then went on a surprise losing streak. Child star Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour both overlooked in their respective categories. There’s always next year…

5. The Handmaid’s Tale makes history for Hulu
After years of Mad Men near misses, Dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale finally gave Elisabeth Moss a satisfying Emmy win. But the big surprise was that lesser known Hulu beat out big hitters Netflix and Amazon to become the first streaming service to win TV's top prize.

6. RuPaul steals the show
Drag Race star RuPaul might have missed out on the best reality series Emmy to The Voice, but he nailed a comedy win for bringing the gold statuette to life during a mid-show interview with Colbert. When Colbert asked: “Do you like Oscar?”, RuPaul replied “He’s cute. We actually dated for a little while. I had to break it off, I just couldn’t date a man who’s naked all the time holding a sword.”
