Funny Not Funny: 7 action films that didn’t mean to make us giggle

Let’s face it: when a movie is unintentionally funny it’s somehow even better than if the filmmakers intended to make a comedy, right? Here, we cherry pick the films and scenes that made us laugh til we cried.
The Hunger Games (2012)

The world’s split into districts, people are poor and downtrodden, teens are chosen and forced to fight in annual death matches – yep, there’s no denying that this dystopian franchise is super heavy. And chortling at the accidentally funny bits offers much needed light relief. Don’t feel bad. We all did it.

Don’t miss the scene where… Peeta pretends to be a rock.

The Punisher (2004)

Thomas Jane and John Travolta take themselves super seriously in this accidentally hilarious vigilante movie about a former FBI agent whose entire family is taken out by a vengeful businessman. He responds by killing everybody, basically.

Don’t miss the scene where… Well, here’s a compilation of all the best ones:

The Core (2003)

Aaron Eckhart plays the college professor who, upon learning the Earth’s electromagnetic forces have started to collapse, assembles a team to burrow into the planet’s core and bomb it back to life. Because no one else is really qualified, it seems. We dare you to sit through this one and not giggle.

Don’t miss the scene where… They do a super-serious ‘cook the earth’ demonstration using a peach, a can of oil and a flame torch.

Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)

Nicholas Cage, Giovanni Rivisi and Angelina Jolie star in this action movie about a former car thief who comes out of retirement to steal 50 cars in one night in order to save his brother’s life. As with so many Nic Cage movies, the hilarity factor is high. We’re just not sure they meant it to be.

Don’t miss the scene where…. Nic unwraps his carjacking tools and says lovingly to his leather jacket, "I am a baaaad man."

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

A remote research facility, a group of scientists searching for an Alzheimer’s cure, animal testing… this action/sci-fi/thriller had an earnest premise. But bad acting and worse CGI just helps the whole thing unravel, fast. Was it intended? We’re not sure. But the results are so funny, we don’t care.

Don’t miss the scene where… one of the super-intelligent mutant sharks eats Samuel L Jackson.

Cliffhanger (1993)

Sly Stallone, John Lithgow and Michael Rooker drive the action in this snowy mountain action romp about baddies who drop a few suitcases of cash out of a plane, and force the local climbers to retrieve them. So much camp, so much over-acting, so many funny moments… so hard to know where to start!

Don’t miss the scene where… Sarah falls to her death and Frank the pilot is grinning like a maniac.

Over The Top (1987)

Sly Stallone plays Lincoln Hawk a man trying to win back his son and prevail at the world arm wrestling championships. It’s action with guns, just not the kind with bullets. And Sly’s facial expressions are the BEST.

Don’t miss the scene where… Sly engages in a super-manly arm wrestle.
