All the Buzz from Comic-Con 2017

The biggest highlights, shocks and reveals from the famous ‘H Hall’. Comic-Con: the annual four-day San Diego geekfest for 200,000 movie, TV and comic fans opened a treasure trove of fresh trailers, breaking news and creative cosplay.
Thor: Ragnarok

Marvel unveiled their tongue-in-cheek new trailer featuring the ripped Norse superhero, a surprisingly talkative Hulk and Loki.  We got our first good look at Aussie Cate Blanchett dialing up the evil, playing the Goddess of Death, Hela. But it was Chris Hemsworth who stole all the best lines. “If we're going to make a third film we really have to push the envelope and experiment take it to another level so that is what this film was. Cut his hair, break his hammer, change his clothes, change the world. I think that's what you're going to see and be excited about,” says Hemsworth. Bring on November.

Ready Player One

Cinematic game changer Steven Spielberg was at Comic-Con to press play on a dizzying new trailer for his new blockbuster, which stars Tye Sheridan as Wade, a kid who prefers the VR world of The Oasis to his bleak futuristic city. Spielberg didn’t disappoint with his version of Ernest Cline’s book, with non-stop action, lasers and 80s references from Akira, Iron Giant, Back to the Future and even a glimpse of shredder Freddy from A Nightmare on Elm Street. We couldn’t be more ready for this one…

Stranger Things 2

Set to Michael Jackson 80s hit “Thriller” and featuring a spine-tingling Vincent Price voice-over, fans were left shook by Netflix reveal of its second spooky season. Packed with pop culture references, including a nod to the retro video game, Dragon’s Lair, the gang is still battling the supernatural forces of the Upside Down with creators Matt and Ross Duffer saying this season will be “bigger, darker and scarier”. The new series is set to drop in October.

Justice League

DC fans got another look at their current fave crime fighter Wonder Woman, as Gal Gadot joins forces with big name superheros Batman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. The epic trailer unveiled the powers of villain Steppenwolf (Game of Thrones Ciarán Hinds) and his armies of Parademons, as well as some awesome action and a cryptic teaser from Alfred Pennyworth (Jeremy Irons) – who talks to a returning character out of frame. Meanwhile, a project that’s very much alive is Wonder Woman 2. The sequel to the box office smash was officially announced at the con.

Ant-Man and The Wasp

In casting news, Marvel announced that former Cat-Woman Michelle Pfieffer is returning to the land of superheroes to play Janet Van Dyke, aka The Wasp, alongside Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. The movie is currently filming in Atlanta.

Black Panther

New footage from Black Panther got a standing ovation and a teary group hug from the cast, after fans waited not so patiently over the weekend for a new trailer to be released, and were instead rewarded with an exclusive sneak peek. The montage (which won’t be released online, boo!) features scenes from a casino, a black Lexus car chase and some impressive fight scenes. Fans went wild for stars Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia) and Andy Serkis (Claw).

Marvel’s The Defenders

Netflix-Marvel’s superhero series The Defenders is only a few weeks away, but the first episode whetted fans appetite for the series, which unites Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist in a war to save New York. Sigourney Weaver rounds out the impressive cast.

The Walking Dead, Season 8

The Walking Dead is still gasping for breath in its eighth season of zombie slaying and it looks like war is on the way for Rick and his survivors. But it was the mysterious flash forward of an older, bearded Rick lying in a wreath of flowers that really got Comic-Con fans talking.  Is it a time-jump? A dream? We’ll just have to wait for the show to return to get our answer.

Bright

Aussie actor Joel Edgerton made his start on the small screen in the 90’s drama, The Secret Life of Us, and now he’s making his return playing an unrecognisable orc police officer alongside Will Smith in Bright. The big-budget urban fantasy features fairies as garden pests and a city divided by different species.
