The Power Of Three

Neapolitan ice-cream. Destiny’s Child. Vodka, lime and soda. All the best things in life come in threes. Why is three just so right?
This got us and our other two personalities thinking: does this also work in the world of TV and movies? It sure does! And we’re not just talking about 3D movies and trilogies. Here are 7 movies and TV shows rockin’ the power of three.

1. The First Wives Club
Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn

Source: [Paramount Pictures]

Speaking of revenge, there is no finer example than the revenge served up by Bette, Diane and Goldie against the skuzzball men in their lives. When divorce happens, don’t just get mad – get everything! This mantra clicked with spurned first wives the world over.

2. Going In Style
Alan Arkin, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine

Three screen legends together for the first time. The voice of God, Juno’s grandpa and Batman’s butler Alfred – what a scene-stealing combo!

These three silver-haired screen icons play a group of friends who aren’t taking retirement lying down, especially when their hard-earned pension funds go missing at the bank. Time for some senior citizen revenge. Who said grumpy old men can’t rock a Smith and Weston and stage a heist?

3. 9 to 5
Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda

Source: [Twentieth Century Fox]

Powered by the Oscar winning song that everybody knows how to sing-a-long to, 9 to 5 is a timeless movie classic from 1980 where three female employees turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical boss. This massively successful and beloved movie also spurned a TV series and a Broadway musical - talk about triple threats!

4. Three Amigos!
Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Martin Short

Source: [L.A. Films]

Who could resist three of the funniest comedians in history coming together for this ridiculously hilarious spoof on B Westerns and Mexican bandit movies. With character names like Dusty Bottoms, Ned Nederlander and Lucky Day, these three Lone Rangers were at the peak of their comedy powers.

5. Charlie’s Angels
The 3 Angels

Source: [Columbia Pictures]

There is only ever one Charlie but there are always three hot angels, in both the kitschy original ‘70’s TV series and the amped-up cinema reboot. You can view this confection either as an ode to prettiness or as a feminist statement - beautiful, strong, independent women doing for themselves...and kicking ass at the same time. Farrah Fawcett is still our favourite Angel of all time, may she rest in peace.

6. Hocus Pocus
The Sanderson Sisters

Source: [Walt Disney Pictures]

What’s better than one Halloween villain? Three of course! And Winnie, Mary and Sarah are the most charming soul-sucking 17th-century era witches we ever knew! Doing their best to acclimate to the 20th century (riding vaccums rather than brooms), they terrorise the town of Salem, raising zombies and mesmerising children with their siren-song.

7. Superbad
Seth, Evan and McLovin

Source: [Columbia Pictures]

Bringing new-found heart and integrity to the age-old angst of experiencing sex before the end of high school, in Superbad best friends Seth and Evan, and their reluctant third wheel have the evening of a lifetime, pursuing girls and booze. This hysterical bromance romp delivers a laugh-a-minute as well as a sincere take on friendship and the inherent awkwardness of high school.
