Out of this world romances

Long distance relationships are hard... but Hollywood has a fascination with love trysts that are a far sight hard-er.
Long distance relationships are hard... but Hollywood has a fascination with love trysts that are a far sight hard-er. We just love an impossible love that defies time, space or convention. From this year’s The Space Between Us to tween classic Twilight, here are our 7 favourite out-of-this-world movie romances:

The Space Between Us (2017)

Gardner Elliot is the first human born and raised on Mars. By age 16, he has only met 14 people. Curious, intelligent and on a quest for knowledge about Earth, Gardner stumbles into an online friendship with Tulsa, a street-smart teen from Colorado. It is a universal story of love that knows no limits.

Planetary distance, and even a different species prove no obstacle in James Cameron’s acclaimed epic, Avatar. Sam Worthington (Jake) and Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) make human-alien love possible in groundbreaking 3-D composited visuals. A romance for the modern world, this was the film that fittingly launched Worthington’s career into an entire new stratosphere.

Superman (1978-2016)

Superman Amy Adam Henry Cavill

Love and superheroes – what an intoxicating combination! And since the first Superman movie in 1978, the silver screen romance between Lois Lane and Clark Kent’s alter ego has been a potent dynamic. From flirtatious and feisty (Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeves), to smart and sexy (Amy Adams and Henry Cavill), this is an out-of-this-world love affair that is always worth watching (the bath scene in Dawn of Justice is SUPER romantic).

Thor (2011)

In all reality, who isn’t going to fall in love with Thor if Chris Hemsworth is playing him? Lucky for astrophysicist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), he fell from the sky on her watch. The god of thunder meets a goddess of science - and it is an eternal love that no inter-dimensional force can separate.

Splash (1984)

This sweet story about human/mermaid love was the first motion picture for Tom Hanks and the first of several collaborations with director Ron Howard (Apollo 13). Daryl Hannah plays a mermaid whose secret is safe – until she gets wet. Oscar nominated for Best Original Screenplay, this is a real heartwarmer with an ending for all hopeless and hopeful romantics.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

They found love in the most unforgiving of places and without her uttering a word. Charlton Heston lands on a planet run by talking apes and Nova, a beautiful mute companion, is his one hope for the future of humanity. Timeless!

Twilight (2008-2012)

Even die-hard fans can’t quite pinpoint why this vampire/human love story is so massively appealing but we have a hunch. Edward’s utter adoration of Bella, and her hopeless addiction towards him is every teenage girl’s fantasy. It is an irrational, steamy, all-consuming connection that goes beyond two different worlds, and ends in immortality.
