On Set Romances

On-Set romances; Lights! Camera! Action!... In the bedroom
You know all that kissy-kissy romance, heavy petting and love-making in movies...well, sometimes it’s not acting. Sometimes what happens in reel life spills over into real life. Here are all those on-set romances that got the rumour mill turning. Some have already fizzled out, some have exploded into tabloid headlines and some have lasted the distance to become true, everlasting, eternal love...for the time being anyway.

Jenny Slate and Chris Evans: Gifted

Even before the cameras started rolling on this thoughtful, thought-provoking tale of a gifted child, there was a spark between the stars, Jenny Slate and Chris Evans. During the film’s chemistry read, it was clear something was happening between the unlikely pair, but neither was sure what. Even after she started dating Evans, Slate thought they made an “odd couple”. It was a sweet romance but a short one. The couple broke up nine months later.

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander: The Light Between Two Oceans

For the filming of this beautiful, heartbreaking movie, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander had to commit to five weeks on New Zealand’s remote Cape Campbell. Fassbender was convinced it was “going to be hell” but by the time filming wrapped neither he, nor his co-star Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) wanted to leave. It wasn’t just the rugged beauty of the location that captivated them; the lead actors had fallen in love. Although intensely private about their relationship since, Fassbender did reveal, “The chemistry was immediate, the spark, the intensity... she’s so fierce and brave . . . it kind of bowled me over.”

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt: Mr. and Mrs. Smith

We all know how this one played out...

Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston when he co-starred with Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. While they always claimed nothing untoward happened during the making of this thriller, the chemistry was truly palpable on screen...and we figure there was very little acting required for the love scenes.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux: Wanderlust

Considering her hubby fell for Angelina during the making of Mr. and Mrs. Smith there is a certain irony that Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux found love on the set of their movie Wanderlust in 2010. For fans of the Friends star, it was the kind of tabloid news they had been waiting for. At last, and after all Jennifer Aniston had gone through so publicly, she had found happiness. And unlike Brangelina, Jennifer and Justin are still going strong...

Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley: Suite Francaise

It was only a small role but clearly it was a life-changing one for Margot Robbie. She was cast as a naive French peasant in the World War II drama, Suite Francaise. He was the third assistant director. Within months of meeting, Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley were a serious item – and private too. Three years later in December 2016, despite a potentially lucrative magazine deal, Robbie and Ackerley chose to tie the knot secretly in front of 50 guests in Coorabell, near Byron Bay.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton Cleopatra

Their real life affair mirrored the narrative of classic Hollywood love stories. From the moment they met on the set of Cleopatra in 1963, they had eyes for no other. It was an all-consuming relationship which caused a sensation as both were married at the time. Sadly even their undeniable passion couldn’t conquer their fiery personalities and their relationship was sullied by bitter fighting and alcoholism. Over two decades, they married, divorced, then married and divorced again. While they both went on to marry again (and again), their love reputedly remained till they died.

Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron High School Musical

Who says young love is a fleeting thing? Vanessa Hudgens was 16 and Zac Efron just 17 when they met on the set of High School Musical in 2005. Their super sweet on-screen romance had young fans wanting more - and they got it. Hudgens and Efron’s love affair spilled over into real life and for the next 5 years they were a Hollywood supercouple crowned with the ship name, Zanessa.

Jennifer and Ben Affleck Garner Daredevil

The two actors first met on the set of the 2001 film Pearl Harbor where Garner played a nurse and Affleck the lead role of Captain McCawley. While they deny any romance at the time – especially since Affleck was engaged to Jennifer Lopez and Garner was married to Scott Foley – it was clear after starring in Daredevil together two years later, they were madly in love with each other. To outsiders, they shared one of those rare, successful Hollywood marriages, but in June 2015 – a day after their 10th wedding anniversary – they followed the path of many others and called in the lawyers.

Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum Step Up

Like their characters in Step Up (2006), Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan were from disparate backgrounds with seemingly little in common except a love of dancing: he was a college dropout who stripped for a living, she a prom queen and university graduate. Yet soon after the film wrapped, their steamy love jumped off the screen and into reality. Dewan and Tatum were married in 2009 and welcomed a daughter, Everly, in 2013. They are unofficially the cutest couple – getting pedicures together, taking the Ice Bucket Challenge together and going head to head on Lip Synch Battle (they became the show’s first co-winners).

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling The Notebook

The Notebook

While they couldn’t stand one another when they were filming The Notebook (2003), the incredible on-screen chemistry between Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling clearly pointed at something to come. Two years later, they saw each other in New York and the attraction was undeniable. They dated on and off until 2008.

Laura Carmichael and Michael Fox Downton Abbey

She played the classic middle child, overshadowed by her dazzling sisters, undervalued by her family and overlooked in love. So it’s rather sweet to think that Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith in Downton Abbey), has found romance much easier than her character ever did. Since 2015, she has been dating Michael Fox who played illiterate footman, Andy Parker, on the show. While they didn’t share many scenes together, the chemistry between them was clear to the cast and crew, and their on-set friendship quickly escalated to full-blown love.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern

Green Lantern

Apparently they were firmly in the “friend zone” after working together on Green Lantern in 2010 but that soon changed after Blake Lively broke up with boyfriend Penn Badgley and Ryan Reynolds’ ended his marriage to Scarlett Johannson. For months they kept their romance a secret and even managed a surprise wedding a year later. Considered the epitome of Hollywood glamour, Lively and Reynolds now have two children.
