Everything You Need To Know About Wonder Woman

She is over 75 years old... and ageless. The Wonder Woman comic-book character first appeared in the early 1940’s and has been a magnetic presence ever since – with a continued relevance in pop culture history.
Now it’s Wonder Woman’s time in the spotlight again, with the release of the very first female-lead superhero feature film.

Former Israeli Defence Forces soldier, former Miss Israel and former model, Gal Gadot is the perfect 21st century incarnation - her physical presence is part ballerina, part gymnast, part wild beast. Wonder Woman is reborn!

Wonder Woman

CREATION:
Psychologist William Moulton Marston created the Wonder Woman character in 1941 as an icon for girls. Over the years, she has been a suffragist, a sex symbol, a soldier, a warrior and even the President of the United States. She’s had many looks- from wholesome, star-spangled, all- American girl in the 1970’s TV version starring Lynda Carter; to muscular, skin tight black leather-clad dominatrix of the 1990’s comic books. The new movie depiction is based on her origin in the ‘New 52’ DC Comics of 2011. Unlike Batman, she is not conflicted with existential angst, and wholeheartedly believes good will triumph over evil.

ORIGINS:
Legend has it that Wonder Woman had a miraculous inception based on ancient Greek myth - sculpted from clay and brought to life by Zeus, Her family name is Diana Prince, daughter of Queen Hippolyta, she is a demigoddess, a princess and an Amazonian warrior hailing from the mythical Themiscira/Paradise Island. She is one of Earth’s most powerful defenders of peace and equality; and is a member of the Justice League. Diana is immortal, defying time, gravity and human frailty.

Wonder Woman

ALLIES:
Raised in a female-only hidden world of Amazonian warriors, Diana has had a protected upbringing- the beloved only daughter of the magnificent Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen from Gladiator) and the protégé of her aunt and protector General Antiope (Robin Wright from House of Cards). These women, along with her other brave compatriots on Themiscira, have taught Diana everything she needs to know about the world – except how to deal with men. Enter Steve Trevor (Chris Pine from Star Trek), a stranded WW1 pilot who becomes her friend... and potential paramour. Steve escorts Diana into the world of men- first to London, where she meets his loyal, frumpy and funny secretary Etta Candy (Lucy Davis from the BBC’s The Office). Etta gives Diana a makeover (or make-under), dressing her in ruffles and corsets that are pretty hard to fight in.

ENEMIES:
In Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman faced off with Doomsday for the spectacular final battle; and in her new movie they up the ante. Diana’s arch rival and chief enemy is a God himself; Ares the God of War. After committing patricide by murdering his own father Zeus, Ares is now hell-bent on destroying all humanity – and anyone who gets in his way to protect it. Ares has powers that can annihilate even Wonder Woman herself and their epic showdown has to be seen to be believed.

POWERS:
If beauty, charisma and sex appeal are powers, then Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman is the power-fueled force the world has been waiting for. Historically, Wonder Woman is one of the strongest DC superheroes with superhuman strength that puts her at least in the same category as Superman. She has superior strength, speed, and agility. She can fly and is expertly trained in hand-to-hand combat.

WEAPONS:
It is golden, it glows, it is whip fast, it is the Lasso of Truth. This magical piece of protection and weaponry was forged by Hephaestus from the Golden Girdle of Gaea, and anyone that finds themself bound by this lasso is compelled to tell the truth. The Bracelets of Victory are indestructible steel cuffs created from the remains of Zeus’s Aegis shield. They can deflect any offensive attack and deflect an object back to an enemy. Generating their own energy shield, they can also emit a devastating lightning attack. The boomerang-like Royal Tiara is razor sharp and has its own magical powers, therefore making it a weapon to those susceptible to magic, such as Superman. As the final touches to her impenetrable wardrobe, Diana’s Shield and Magical Sword of Athena, sharp enough to cut the electrons off an atom, are her most cherished possessions. Wonder Woman’s sword didn’t appear in the comic books until the 1980’s.
