She’s back! The rise and rise of the female action hero

Trailblazing action heroine Linda Hamilton will return in the new Terminator, joining a growing legion of female action stars kicking serious butt onscreen.
Director James Cameron has announced his leading lady will be staging a comeback in the new instalment. Linda Hamilton made biceps the hottest accessory in Hollywood, playing buff warrior mum Sarah Connor in the 1991 blockbuster sequel. “As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return," said Cameron. “There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys,” he said, referring to aging male stars still headlining action movies, “but there isn’t an example of that for women.” Nice one, Jimmy.

Hamilton is re-teaming with the original time travelling killer robot, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the search is on for a teenage girl to be what Cameron describes as the “centrepiece of the new story.” How about Millie Bobby Brown? Just saying…

While we wait for Sarah Connor to blast back onto screens, here are some of our current favourite femme fighters.

Gal Gadot: This military vet and former Miss Israel blew audiences away playing the Amazonian warrior in DC Comics’ Wonder Woman. With a sequel cranking and a return to screen later this year in Justice League, Gadot is a legit action star.

Charlize Theron: The Oscar-winning South African actress got some target practice taking on Tom Hardy as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road. But she really blew up as a gun-toting martial arts master in Atomic Blonde, which earnt her the tag; “The next female James Bond.” Next up Charlize will continue to show no mercy playing the villain in The Fate of the Furious.

Alicia Vikander: It’s not easy stepping into a role defined by mega star Angelina Jolie, but the new Lara Croft is more than ready to take up the bow and arrow. 28-year-old Swedish actress Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) will pull on the khakis and backpack to play the fearless archaeologist in the upcoming Tomb Raider. We. Cannot. Wait!

Daisy Ridley: English actress Daisy Ridley showed off her Jedi warrior potential playing plucky orphan Rey in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She returns to show the dark side who’s boss in the new end of year instalment, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The actress has shown she’s a force to be reckoned with in early trailers, showing off impressive light saber battle skills. Look out, Kylo Ren.
