The best horror movies on Netflix right now

Sleepless nights are made of these…
The Babadook (2014)
Scary storybooks may be banned after this demonic scare-fest about a mother and her disturbed young son who’s convinced the creature in his creepy new storybook is the one coming to kill them both. Not all horrors get under your skin and stay there, but this one might!

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Joss Whedon co-wrote this with director Drew Goddard, and it stars some big names including Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth and Richard Jenkins. The premise is one we’ve seen before: a group of kids go to a cabin deep in the woods – but this isn’t your typical slasher. The Big Brother-style script has its funny moments, but it’s also scarily unpredictable, so be warned…

The Reef

If you’re an Aussie with a shark phobia, don’t worry – pretty much half the country shares it with you. And this Australian horror, about a group of friends whose sailing boat capsizes en-route to Indonesia in shark-infested waters, definitely won’t make you feel any better about going body-surfing this summer. Just sayin’.

Black Water (2008)

Another local offering about a group of friends who take a river cruise into an outback swamp. You’ve got to love survival horror that involves a massive croc, creepy mangroves and zero mobile reception, right? This’ll make you want to view crocs in one place only: the zoo!

Backpacking will drop off your bucket list fast – especially to Slovakia – after checking out this truly gruesome slasher about cooltwo travelling buddies who befriend an Icelander who lures them to a hostel full of hot girls (or is it?). Twisted and gory, we’re filing this under ‘films for utter sickos’.

Misery (1989)

An oldie but a goodie, this Stephen King adaptation about an author kidnapped by his number one fan after he suffers a car accident is a nail-biter from start to finish. The then relatively-unknown Kathy Bates was so good as the evil axe-wielding psychopath, she even won an Oscar!
