Israeli actress Gal Gadot stars as the DC Universe’s Wonder Woman
Hollywood secrets are kept under a tight guard. When Gal Gadot flew into the States to audition for the role of Wonder Woman in the upcoming DC blockbuster, she thought she was auditioning for Cat Woman. In an interview with EMPIRE, the Israeli actress admits that her actual role was only known to her on the day of a performance test with the newest cinematic Batman, Ben Affleck: “I mean, I could have guessed. I thought it was going to be Selina (Kyle), you know?”
It’s an understandable guess. At the time of announcement Wonder Woman was nowhere to be seen, and Cat Woman is as closely tied to the Dark Knight as any female character in the DC-verse can claim to be. But when Gadot heard the news from director Zack Snyder himself, she struggled (understandably) to keep it together.
For what it’s worth, our condolences to Ellen DeGeneres for not getting the part.
The casting is a dream come true for Gadot. She has always had a preference for independent roles, saying to EMPIRE that “anytime I had general meetings in LA, I always said that my dream role was to do an empowered, independent woman who doesn’t rely on men.” Even in her early career, Gadot had a solid idea of the actress she intended to become. An interview with Jimmy Kimmel reveals that she mentally forfeited the Miss Universe Pageant: “I set myself a mission not to win the Miss Universe Pageant . . . I’m just not that type of girl!”
DeGeneres and Gadot also discuss the importance of Wonder Woman as a role model. Of course, Gadot wants to be a superhero for her own daughter and other young female comic fans around the world.
But within the fiction itself, Wonder Woman is also sent out from her secluded warrior-guardian society as Themyscira’s only ambassador, acting as representative and role model in all of the parallel earths that exist throughout the multiverse. Except reality designation Earth-3, where the heroes are villains and the villains are heroes. Stay away from Earth-3.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is looking like a strong counter to Marvel’s Avengers. If you can’t wait to see this cornerstone in DC’s cinematic line-up , feel free to play this trailer on repeat.
